Los Alamos to host first Grace GPU supercomputer
In a turn that may only be mildly metaphorical, the Los Alamos National Laboratory may soon be home to the most powerful supercomputer in the world.
The HPE Cray EX supercomputer consists of 2,560 direct, liquid-cooled Nvidia Grace Hopper Superchips; 920 Nvidia Grace CPU Superchips, each of which contains 144 Arm cores; and is networked with HPE Slingshot 11 interconnect.
This will be the first large-scale US deployment of the highly anticipated Grace GPU superchips from Nvidia.
When first announced, LANL, HPE, and Nvidia said the system would be capable of 10 exaflops of peak AI performance. (Although, this has yet to be confirmed.)
“Powerful supercomputing with AI-driven capabilities will enable researchers to make high-impact breakthroughs and solve real-world problems in this next era of scientific discovery,” said Trish Damkroger, senior vice president and general manager, HPC & AI Infrastructure Solutions at HPE.

More in Cooling, Tech and Power
1. Georgia Power’s Juggling Act: Georgia Power is on a quest to provide “clean-enough” energy to Georgia’s exploding data center industry. Currently, they’re juggling recent approvals of 2.4GW of new fossil fuel power facilities with the knowledge that without a clean enough energy mix hyperscalers will be forced to go elsewhere for their power.
2. NeuCool - Accelsius’s small footprint cooling solution: NeuCool’s big offering is the ability to add liquid cooling solutions to your data center without a massive retrofit. The system fits into traditional racks from 42U-50U, with no special mounting required. Here’s what it looks like.

Hardware can’t seem to win right now…
Stock prices are falling for AI hardware firms, underscoring the challenges of navigating the unchartered waters of our AI renaissance and its implication on the semiconductors market.
Despite mixed reported results, Intel, AMD, and Super Micro Computer all saw significant stock declines last week.
A Challenging Chip Market
Intel experienced a net loss of $437 million in the first quarter, and their revenue of $12.7 billion fell short of the expected $12.8 billion. The company has projected even weaker earnings for the upcoming quarter.
The news caused the stock to drop 7% in after-hours trading.

However, as we’ve covered, Intel has good reason to be optimistic about the future of its chip business, but right now they are struggling to meet expectations.
AMD also saw a decrease in their stock by over 7% after revising their data center revenue forecasts downward, despite strong growth in their data center business, which saw an 80% increase in sales.
The chipmaker can boast robust demand for its MI300 GPU, which supports AI workloads and anticipates further expansion in its AI hardware and software offerings. However, the company faces declining revenue in other sectors, like gaming and embedded chips.
AMD even revised its data center revenue expectations up to $4 billion from $3.5 billion, but investors were hoping for a significantly bigger upward revision given current demand.
AI server maker and Wall Street darling Supermicro lost 10% of its value despite reporting a 200% increase in sales year-over-year. Silicon Angle suggests the declining prices may be due to investors taking profits. The company has seen its shares rally more than 700% in the last 12 months.
The company is one of only a few manufacturers making customized servers powered by Nvidia GPUs, and thus have been wildly in demand over the last 18 months. The company reports that they would have sold even more servers had it not been for critical component shortages.
What’s More:
The volatile nature of these key AI hardware stocks betrays the current challenges of forecasting anything related to AI.
With logistical challenges and exploding demand and an exponential technology, it is nearly impossible to predict what the market (and its key players) will look like in the long run.
More Big Deals
Amazon has $11 Billion planned for a Northern Indiana data center. The initiative is part of the Indiana Development Center and will be the largest capital expenditure in the state’s history.
For their trouble, Indiana is offering AWS sales tax exemptions for 50 years, up to $18.3 million in headcount-based tax credits, up to $55 million in Hoosier Business Investment tax credits, and up to $20 million in redevelopment tax credits.Costar reports cloud giants are seeing 30% annual investment growth.
Dahlgren West will be a 9 million-square-foot data center complex. Spread over 500 acres, the 10-15 building data center will be one of the largest single colocation facilities in the world. Potomac Development Group is the capital behind the project, and they are in the very early stages of bringing this online.
